PAR: Study Medicaid expansion

by Walter Pierce

The good-government advocacy nonprofit has produced a report delineating some of the demographic and health-care-delivery issues the state will be facing, and it urges Gov. Bobby Jindal to explain his alternative to expanding Medicaid.

The Public Affairs Research Council of Louisiana Tuesday recommended that state lawmakers "conduct a more thorough analysis of the costs and benefits of expanding Medicaid coverage for uninsured adults under the Affordable Care Act. Key factors have not been considered in previous analyses."

The good-government advocacy nonprofit has produced a report delineating some of the demographic and health-care-delivery issues the state will be facing, and it urges Gov. Bobby Jindal to explain his alternative to expanding Medicaid. Jindal is one of a handful of Republican governors who refuse to expand Medicaid, a key component of Obamacare.

"The current governor and possibly the next governor will be facing the very significant decision of whether to adopt the Medicaid eligibility expansion for adults," sPAR President Robert Travis Scott says in a press release announcing the report. "Whether the state goes along or not, there are both positive and negative consequences either way. A new analysis could help us better understand those trade-offs and give us a better estimate than we have now about the ultimate impact of this new health care program."
