Essence releases nightly headliners for 2013 fest

Organizers say the festival opens Friday, July 5, with R&B powerhouses Jill Scott and Maxwell as well as rapper LL Cool J and Brandy headlining the nightly concerts at the Superdome. On Saturday, Charlie Wilson, New Edition, Trey Songz, Keyshia Cole and Solange will entertain fans on the mainstage.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - More details about the 2013 Essence Festival have been released, giving fans another look at the talent in store for the music and cultural celebration.

Organizers say the festival opens Friday, July 5, with R&B powerhouses Jill Scott and Maxwell as well as rapper LL Cool J and Brandy headlining the nightly concerts at the Superdome. On Saturday, Charlie Wilson, New Edition, Trey Songz, Keyshia Cole and Solange will entertain fans on the mainstage.

Sunday's closing performance features Beyonce as well as Janelle Monáe and the supergroup, TGT, consisting of Tyrese, Ginuwine and Tank.

The appearances on the mainstage will be first-time experiences for TGT, Solange and Monáe.

Newly added superlounge acts include Faith Evans, Luke James, Tamia, Emeli Sandé, Alice Smith and Shamarr Allen and the Underdawgs, among others.
