Jeff Landry: the GOP's worst nightmare

by Walter Pierce

Be afraid, mainstream Republicans - even you Goldwater Republicans - be very afraid. Former U.S. Rep. Jeff Landry ain't going away.

Be afraid, mainstream Republicans - even you Goldwater Republicans - be very afraid. Former U.S. Rep. Jeff Landry ain't going away.

Politico reported this week on the New Iberia Tea Party Republican's new gig in DC: directing a newly former super PAC, Restore Our Republic, which the Beltway political website characterizes as a group that aims "to give conservatives aligned with the GOP's activist base the same outside support that establishment-side Republicans get from independent expenditure groups."

ROR PAC's focus will be on electing ultra-conservative candidates in the U.S. House of Representatives. As Politico reports:

Landry said the group will not shy away from going after incumbent lawmakers who are insufficiently conservative or taking sides against other national GOP groups in open-seat primary races. A first target could be the soon-to-be vacant House seat in Louisiana's 6th District, which GOP Rep. Bill Cassidy is leaving to run for Senate.
So expect Landry and his super PAC - Couldn't they have called it Restore Our American Republic? You know ... ROAR? Like a lion? - to give us candidates like Todd "Legitimate Rape" Aiken and Christine "I'm Not A Witch" O'Donnell: appealing in a primary, unpalatable in a general and, as has been often the case, costing the GOP potential seats in Congress.

Progress via compromise: extremists have a way of shutting that whole thing down.
