For its June edition, the Cane Fire Film Series is screening Far Out Isn't Enough: The Tomi Ungerer Story. The film follows one man's wild, lifelong adventure of pushing society's boundaries with his enthralling and subversive art.
Growing up in German-occupied France during World War II, Tomi Ungerer produced some of the most iconic imagery of the 1960s and 70s. From his sensational visual commentaries protesting America's involvement in Vietnam to the many adored characters of his children's books, he is admired the world over for the influence his work has had on a myriad of art forms.
Far Out Isn't Enough takes traditional documentary storytelling and combines it with original animation plucked from more than 70 years worth of signature art from the renegade children's book author and illustrator.
The film paints a colorful retrospective of Ungerer's epic yet controversial life through a palette of 20th Century events while exploring the numerous complexities and contradictions of a man who gave graphic portrayal to the many revolutionary voices screaming out during one of the most beguiling and volatile periods in American History.
Far Out Isn't Enough screens on Sunday, June 30, at Cité des Arts starting at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door.
