Record-breaking pace continues for retail sales

Retail sales in Lafayette Parish are on pace to break last year's record.

June's retail sales in Lafayette Parish came in at $527 million, 2.5 percent higher than June a year ago and 6.5 percent more than May of this year. Year-to-date retail sales are up to $2.96 billion, a 3.92 percent increase over the first six months of 2012.

Taxable sales were $5.72 billion last year, a record for the parish.

"June 2013 is the third highest single month on record since LEDA began tracking retail sales in Lafayette Parish, with December 2012 [$596 million] and 2011 being the first and second highest," LEDA President and CEO Gregg Gothreaux said in announcing the monthly figure. "With six months of sales recorded, we continue to be on pace with last year's record-setting numbers and our forecasting model indicates the possibility of exceeding those numbers."

Hotel/motel receipts this year also continue to outperform 2012 totals. June receipts totaled $6.9 million, putting the year-to-date total of $41.2 million 3.23 percent higher than the first six months of 2012.
