Charter commish ordinance postponed

by Walter Pierce

Supporters of the ordinance hope its passage will ultimately lead to the city of Lafayette having greater autonomy.

An introductory ordinance that if approved would clear the way for the appointment of a charter commission that was scheduled for a vote Tuesday night by the City-Parish Council has been postponed until Sept. 17. Co-sponsor Don Bertrand, the District 7 councilman, tells The Ind he believes a couple of councilmen who opposed the ordinance a few weeks ago might come around, and the delay is "in order to get questions answered [about the ordinance and proposed charter commission] and hopefully get those additional votes."

The ordinance failed by a 5-4 vote three weeks ago, with four of the five councilmen who represent a majority of the city of Lafayette voting in favor. Supporters of the ordinance hope its passage will ultimately lead to the city of Lafayette having greater autonomy.
