BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - A group of Louisiana education leaders, lawmakers and others is looking at ways to tweak Louisiana's multibillion-dollar public school funding formula.
The new task force opened its discussions Wednesday about the $3.5 billion spending plan.
The funding formula, known as the Minimum Foundation Program or MFP, divvies up state dollars to Louisiana's 70 public school districts, based on the number and type of students they have and the individual districts' wealth.
Superintendent of Education John White and BESE have sought changes to the payments for special education and gifted students. Lawmakers rejected those changes and said they wanted more study.
The task force was created by the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education. The group will hold four more meetings through December before making recommendations for the 2014-15 formula.
