Acadiana 365’s Pick of the Day: ‘Bending Sticks’

Vermilionville gets sticky with the screening of "Bending Sticks: The Sculpture of Patrick Dougherty" on Monday, Oct. 14, at 6:30 p.m.

Vermilionville teams up with the South Arts Southern Circuit of Independent Filmmakers for the screening of Bending Sticks: The Sculpture of Patrick Dougherty. The film is a feature documentary that analyzes the 25 year career of world renowned environmental artist Patrick Dougherty who has created hundreds of monumental, site-specific sculptures out of nothing more than mere tree saplings.

Bending Sticks follows Dougherty and his team during a year of organic artmaking and discloses the artist's process along with his personal story and inspirations. During the course of the film, Dougherty creates five separate commissions in a variety of locations where viewers get to see first hand how Dougherty transforms piles of sticks into energetic lines and exuberant forms.

Following the screening will be a Q & A discussion with filmmakers Kenny Daisheimer and Penelope Maunsell where audience members will be able to interact in a discussion about the art of Patrick Dougherty.

Bending Sticks: The Sculpture of Patrick Dougherty begins on Monday, Oct. 14, at 6:30 p.m., at Vermilionville, located at 300 Fisher Road. Admission is $10. For more information, visit Vermilionville.org.
