Scott Turow
When Scott Turow first published Presumed Innocent in 1986, it not only launched his career as one of America's pre-eminent who-done-it novelists, but it also marked the advent of the age of the legal thriller in popular modern literature. Other novelists, including the prolific John Grisham, Michael Connelly and Steve Martini, soon followed, but unlike most, Turow has also distinguished himself in the non-fiction arena. His book on the death penalty titled Ultimate Punishment won the coveted Robert F. Kennedy Book Award in 2004, and he is a respected and frequent contributor on legal matters to The New York Times, The Washington Post, Vanity Fair and The New Yorker, among others.
Amid this success, Turow continues to practice law, and it is his unflinching commitment to his legal career that appeals to Blake David, president of the Lafayette Parish Bar Association. "When we began discussing the opportunity for the bar association to be part of The IND's lecture series, Scott Turow was one of our first choices as speaker," he says. "By choosing a best-selling author who is also an attorney, we hope to bring value to the community in addition to our membership."
Turow now concentrates on white-collar criminal defense work as a partner in an international law firm in his native Chicago and devotes a substantial amount of time to pro bono matters. While an assistant U.S. attorney, he served as lead counsel in a number of prosecutions related to corruption in the Illinois judiciary as part of Operation Greylord. An honors graduate from Amherst College and Harvard Law, Turow is in his second term as president of The Writers Guild, the nation's largest membership organization of professional writers. With nine best sellers, two television mini-series and a blockbuster movie under his belt, he is now on a national book tour for his latest work of fiction, Identical.
This marks the close of the 2013 IND Lecture Series, which is sponsored annually by IberiaBank.
