Acadiana 365’s Weekend Picks

This weekend, Hub City Cycles holds its Grand Opening and the ASO performs its rendition of "Fantasia 2000."

Here are highlights from some of the many happening around town this weekend from Acadiana365.com.

Kristallnacht 75 Years Later: An Evening of Reflection and Remembrance

Join the congregation of Temple Shalom as it marks the 75th anniversary of one of the most important events of the Holocaust: the nationwide assault on the Jews of the Third Reich. Kristallnacht, literally, "Night of Crystal," is often referred to as the "Night of Broken Glass." The name refers to the wave of violent anti-Jewish pogroms which took place on November 9 and 10, 1938, throughout Germany, annexed Austria, and in areas of the Sudetenland in Czechoslovakia recently occupied by German troops. A brief Sabbath Service will be held followed by two presentations by Dr. Richard Frankel, Assistant Professor of history at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette titled "Kristallnacht in Context: International Antisemitism in 1938;" and one by Manny Klepper, a local resident and Holocaust survivor who will discuss Kristallnacht as he experienced it as a child in Nazi Germany.

The event takes place at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 8, at Temple Shalom, located at 603 Lee Ave. For more information call (337) 234-3760.

The cycling community will have the chance to welcome the new shop to the Downtown area following Critical Mass with a grand opening celebration complete with live music by local band FIGHTs! and DJ Gold Machete.

Hub City Cycles Grand Opening will be held on Friday, Nov. 8, at 7:30 p.m., located across from Parc San Souci at 208 East Vermilion St., in Downtown Lafayette. The event is free and open to the public. For more information call (337) 235-2453 or visit Facebook.com/LafayetteCycles.

ASO present Disney's 'Fantasia'

The Acadiana Symphony Orchestra, in partnership with Bo and Jerry Ramsay, present a special performance of Fantasia 2000, an animated feature set to classical pieces performed live by The ASO. A sequel to Disney's original 1940 film, Fantasia 2000 features live action scenes and computer-generated animation along with selections from Stravinsky, Beethoven, Dukas and Respighi, among others. A host of celebrities including Steve Martin, Itzhak Perlman, Bette Midler, Penn & Teller, James Earl Jones and Angela Lansbury introduce each segment in live-action scenes, telling the story of each piece and providing a visual transition between various animation styles. ASO is also hosting a special pre-concert VIP party for children prior to the show, featuring musical games, dancing, face painting and more. Kids are invited to dress as their favorite princess, prince or friendly character and enjoy cookies and milk with a real princess along with other special guests.

The film and live concert performance of Fantasia 2000 will be held at the Heymann Performing Arts Center, located at 1373 S. College Road, on Saturday, Nov. 9, at 4 p.m. For more information about the performance and pre-concert VIP Party for children, visit www.acadianasymphony.org or call (337) 232-4277.
