When cops behave badly
A Breaux Bridge Police officer's attempt to sway a victim's photo lineup selection following a 2010 armed robbery almost resulted in an innocent man being pegged with a crime he didn't commit. The officer eventually resigned from the department, and as the Acadiana Advocate reports here, the city of Breaux Bridge recently settled a federal lawsuit filed by the nearly framed man, who it's worth noting, had two alibi witnesses and no criminal history.

Separate trials for McKinley Street murder suspects
Here's a trial update from KLFY TV10 on the McKinley Street murder of a UL student in 2010. According to the report, the two defendants will stand trial separately, but no date has been set for when that will happen.
Saving Bunk's plaza
Here's a story from The Daily Iberian about an effort by several neighborhood coalitions to take back a park named for the jazz musician Bunk Johnson, which over the years has become a hot-spot for drug dealing, prostitution and public intoxication. During his career, which spanned the early to mid 19th century, Johnson played alongside such greats as Louis Armstrong, Clarence Williams and even the Shreveport blues legend Lead Belly.
Saved by the smoke alarm
A Lafayette family is fortunate to be alive this morning after a fire consumed their home just before 2 a.m. According to this story from KATC TV 3, the family had recently swapped the batteries in their smoke detector, which alerted their young daughter to the trouble coming from the living room, allowing all three to get out in the nick of time.
