Lafayette Parish School Board member Greg Awbrey will have some competition come election season.
In an announcement released earlier this week, Kathleen Schott Espinoza has confirmed she'll run for the District 6 seat on the school board in the upcoming election, set for Nov. 4.
"I love Lafayette parish and I have a tremendous respect for the public school system that this community has nurtured," says Espinoza in a prepared statement. "I do not accept that we have failing schools: I believe we have challenges in our system that take hard work, care and community support to meet. I want to serve District 6 and the people of Lafayette Parish to do my part to help educate our children."
Espinoza has 20 years experience as an educator, and currently is a faculty member of UL Lafayette's geography department. She holds a bachelor's degree in International Relations from George Washington University, a Master's degree in Geography from LSU, and a teaching certificate for secondary social studies from UL Lafayette. Espinoza has four children attending Lafayette Parish schools, and her husband, Rodolfo, is also a longtime educator and president of the Lafayette Education Association.
Espinoza was also active in the SwampBESE movement, and is a member the League of Women Voters of Lafayette, PPEL: Power of Public Education Lafayette, and the Education Vision of United Way.
