LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) - UL Lafayette is adding covered parking for bicycles - covered racks for about 40 bicycles near Sorority Row and 20 bicycle lockers in two parking garages.

Director of Transportation Services Cheri Soileau says the bike lockers will hold not only bicycles but some gear such as helmets and inner tubes.

They will be rented by the semester, starting with the summer semester.

University spokesman Charlie Bier says the rental rate hasn't been decided.

The covered racks are being installed as part of a new paved, lighted parking lot.

Student fees pay for both projects. Earlier this semester, the outer two lanes of two university area roads were converted into bike lanes.

The university provided $70,000 for the project; Lafayette Consolidated Government designed and installed the bike lanes.

The university's long-range plans include more lockers, racks and bike stations.
