Billboard fight goes to court

The fight between MoveOn.org and the state Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism is heating up this week in federal court, reports the Baton Rouge Advocate.

The fight between MoveOn.org and the state Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism is heating up this week in federal court, reports the Baton Rouge Advocate.

The issue centers on the advocacy group's use of the "Pick Your Passion" slogan in critiquing Gov. Bobby Jindal's rejection of the federally-funded Medicaid expansion.

"The idea of the billboard is here that the state promotes itself as a great place to live and visit yet we ... want to make a point that it's not such a good place to live and visit because of health care policy decisions of the governor," MoveOn.org attorney Joseph Sandler tells the Advocate.

The state argues that the slogan is a registrered trade mark that has been illegally expropriated by MoveOn.org, while the advocacy group claims it's using the phrase as a constitutionally protected form of parody.
