LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) - UL Lafayette petroleum graduate students have won an international contest to analyze data and describe the best place to drill for oil.
UL was among 122 schools in the Imperial Barrel Award Competition and 13 in the finals this past weekend in Houston. Universities offering master's degrees in petroleum geoscience or closely related subjects can enter.
Students analyze datasets covering an area's geology, geophysics, land, production infrastructure and other factors and give a 25-minute presentation to experts. They're judged on technical quality, clarity and originality.
UL also won in 2012. According to a news release, it's the first two-time winner since the contest went international
Winners get $20,000 for their department. Advisor Brian Lock says the money will go to scholarships, equipment and software for future teams.
