Dish of the day: French Press' Croque Madame

by Kari Walker

Ham-and-cheese-sandwich-heaven served with crispy frites

Most think of breakfast or brunch when The French Press is mentioned, but the vast selections on the lunch menu are love at first bite. There's nothing boring about today's dish of the day: a not-so-ordinary ham and cheese sandwich.

The Croque Madame is Black Forest ham and Gruyere cheese with tomatoes and an herbed aioli spread topped with a sunny-side-up egg and Béchamel Sauce. For $11.75 it comes served with a choice of fries or bacon and scallion potato salad.

If you're stopping in for breakfast, don't feel guilty if you decide to go with this sandwich instead of a pancake or two. However, the candied walnut pancake stack is also an excellent choice. The menu at The French Press is agreeable to any time of day. When Saturday and Sunday morning roll around, expect a wait for a table, but no worries as you can grab a mimosa or two and chat with friends on a bench in front while you wait.
