The artists - hailing from Louisiana, Texas, Missouri and Tennessee - range from illustrators, painters, graffiti writers, printer makers to art teachers, and they aren't necessarily exhibiting or selling pieces; they'll be creating them live, in real time on wall panels.
Aramenation II: Return of Electric Boogaloo is coming to Freetown Studios on Saturday, April 12, and it's not your typical art show.
For starters, it isn't confined to one medium; the artists - hailing from Louisiana, Texas, Missouri and Tennessee - range from illustrators, painters, graffiti writers, printer makers to art teachers, and they aren't necessarily exhibiting or selling pieces; they'll be creating them live, in real time on wall panels.
Besides live painting, the event will feature experimental music producers from across the state, who will provide electronic tunes to set the mood. Spectators are invited to dance, drink and even bring along their own paint supplies and join in. They can also donate $5 to sponsor an artist.
Organizer Pat Phillips, a Pineville native and the cover artist for IND Monthly's 2013 Cool Town issue, says the idea for the event began as a joint effort with Johnathan Wilson and Susan David of Freetown Studios and adds that they hope to continue it annually, or biannually.
"I just had an exhibit in New Orleans, and that's all dope," says Phillips, one of the event's creators. "J.J [Wilson] just got back from Vermont, and many of the artists are doing pretty dope things within the gallery setting, but at the end of the day it's all about having fun, building a scene and taking art out of the sterile environment."
The free event begins at 6 p.m. Phillips says don't expect to get extra credit from your teacher for attending - expect paint fumes, dancing and a good time.
