The Lafayette City-Parish Council at its Tuesday meeting will consider an introductory ordinance that, if approved, would levy fines against residents who fail to move their garbage and recycling bins away from the road in a timely fashion.
The ordinance would require city residents to move the bins back to within 3 feet of their homes or businesses within 24 hours after the waste has been collected. Failure to do so could result in a $25 fine issued by public works, with a $150 cap on fines in a calendar year. Residents in unincorporated Lafayette Parish who don't live in subdivisions would have it a littler easier: They merely have to get their bins 10 feet away from the road within 24 hours. Violators would first be given a warning before a fine would be levied.
The ordinance would also require residents to keep their Lafayette Consolidated Government-issued trash and recycling bins clean and within good working order, and Public Works would be authorized to conduct inspections to ensure residents are complying with the ordinance's guidelines.
