While there may be no science behind the ranking, it's no secret that beaches in Cameron are pretty terrible, evidenced by the many warnings issued each summer by the state Department of Health and Hospitals cautioning swimmers about high bacteria levels in the Gulf there. The ranking takes into consideration many factors that contribute to danger for swimmers - from sharks and crocodiles to pollution, trash and high levels of radiation. Of Cameron Parish beaches, the website writes:

Nothing will likely attack you at the Cameron Parish beaches in Louisiana. Nothing, except for some dangerous bacteria which can cause serious gastrointestinal illnesses. According to the Natural Resources Defense Council's data, Louisiana beaches were considered the most contaminated in the US in 2012. The reason for such bad pollution is probably sewage effluents and storm-water runoffs. So, if you're going to spend your vacation in Cameron Parish, don't forget to take your full metal jacket with you.

Also on the list are beaches in Brazil (ranked for shark and other critter attacks), South Africa (sharks), Florida (sharks), India (garbage), Domincan Republic (garbage) and the Marshall Islands (radiation from nuclear tests), among others.
