ALFORD: PLENTY OF SNAKES, NO JINDALMAY 29 This entertaining first-person piece in Gambit by columnist Jeremy Alford analyzes Gov. Bobby Jindal's change in behavior (and strategy?) this session. Instead of ramming his questionable "reforms" down legislators' throats, he's not around, Alford writes, and that seems to help his numbers. The less Bobby does, the better the voters like him. That's good, since according to this you're more likely to see a snake at the Capitol than you are to see Bobby.

MAY 29 Here's an op-ed piece in the New York Times, no less, by our own Russel Honore. Of course, he's writing about our legislature's attempts to kill lawsuits that would hold Big Oil accountable for its role in the destruction of our coast. They're not 100 percent responsible, he says, but they did play a role and the big companies need to take responsibility for that.

ASWELL: COMMITTEE CHAIR CITED FOR ILLEGAL DUMPING
MAY 29 Even as his committee was voting to kill a lawsuit aimed at holding Big Oil responsible for its role in the destruction of Louisiana's coast, a legislator is facing charges his trucking company dumped radioactive oilfield waste in Montana, blogger Tom Aswell tells us in this post. The dump site is near a housing development, and on top of a sandy wetlands area, Aswell say. Huh. Now that sounds familiar, don't it?

DEBERRY: LOSING MAYA IS LIKE LOSING FAMILY
MAY 29 Columnist Jarvis DeBerry writes here about the passing this week of Dr. Maya Angelou, the author, poet, philosopher, storyteller, dancer, singer -- it's impossible to describe the lady in one or two words. But beyond her work and words, Angelou was family, wasn't she? DeBerry examines that feeling so many of us had for her.

MAY 29 Sam Hanna Jr. writes about the passing of John Maginnis in this post, remembering John's genial personality and encyclopediac knowledge of Louisiana politics. His memories of John go way back.

ADVOCATE: GOP 'FLAT WRONG' ON MEDICAID EXPANSION
MAY 29 The Advocate posts this editorial in support of "sensible" Medicaid expansion. Sure, you can criticize every aspect of Obamacare if you want, but that doesn't change the positive impact this expansion could have on Louisiana, the editorial argues.

CONTRACT-LIMITING BILL IS ADVANCING
MAY 29 A bill that would rein in state contract use is advancing in the legislature, but it continues to move farther away from its original version, LaPolitics reports in this post. The money saved by the changes would be sent to higher ed -- which would be good, because Lord knows they need it.

MAY 29 Blogger Ian McGibboney is writing about football, and one former quarterback in particular: Aaron Brooks. Generally you love him or hate him, and Ian says you can put him down in the former camp, because he's got fond memories of Brooks.
