USN calls JIndal on Common Core crawfishing
JUNE 2 This post in US News and World Report is about Bobby Jindal's change of heart on Common Core. His about-face (hates it now, loved it before) is going to come back to haunt him, the post opines. Heck, he was part of the brain trust that came up with the thing. He'll need a "pithy" answer when the subject is raised, David Catanese predicts. (Good luck: Pithy is not in Bobby's wheelhouse.)

Gill: Stanford scandal is now election fodder
JUNE 2 The victims of Allen Stanford's ponzi scheme haven't gotten the payouts that Bernie Madoff's victims did, but they might get lucky soon, columnist James Gill writes in this post. Seems that the election cycle could work in their favor, as our fearless leaders are now "thirsting either for justice or votes," Gill writes.

NOLA.com comments have disappeared?
JUNE 2 This is disconcerting: Mark Moseley writes that the NOLA.com comments archive -- which contains some pretty interesting stuff (you know, like "anonymous" posts from some former federal prosecutors about their targets?) -- is acting all squirrely now. Could it be that lawyers fighting their release made them disappear?

Is this why he keeps cutting higher ed?
JUNE 2 When Bobby Jindal wrote (another?) newspaper column his week, he talked about for-profit higher education entities. As the Picayune tells us in this post, he forgot to tell everyone that his brother makes a lot of money off of them. But here's an interesting unanswered question -- Jindal has cut public higher ed more than any governor we've had - ever. Is this why? Does he want to privatize higher ed too?

JUNE 2 Gambit gives us the list here of coastal legislators who voted with Big Oil and against Louisiana on the bill that aims to retroactively kill a lawsuit seeking to force the energy companies to pay their share of damages to our coastline. The bill is on Jindal's desk now, but no big mystery there. Next up: will the courts allow the legislature to kill the suit?

Aswell: Big Oil bill is going to screw us up
JUNE 2 In their eagerness to shield billion dollar oil companies from taking responsibility for their actions, our legislature may have made a pretty big mess, blogger Tom Aswell opines in this post. But hey -- they got their (ahem, 'campaign') money, so who cares? All is right with the world!

Mann: Help vets - quit making so many
JUNE 2 Blogger Robert Mann has an interesting idea: if we want to get a handle on the veterans' care issue, maybe we quit producing so many veterans. The same politicians screaming about vets' care also voted to cut funding for it, and voted to send troops to fight a "needless war," Mann says. But maybe some good will come out of this, he says, and we'll finally start (truly) respecting our veterans and their service.

JUNE 2 This post on the NOLA Defender blog features a video instruction on how to mix a classic Mai Tai, featuring the Cane & Table restaurant on Decatur. Maybe your toes aren't really in the sand, but you can dream!
