State police say the two men charged with killing an off-duty Vermilion Parish Sheriff's deputy admitted they knew he was a law enforcement officer before one of them pulled the trigger.

Citing an account by state police, the Acadiana Advocate reports the the two suspects, Quintylan Richard and Baylon Taylor, were approached by Allen Bares Jr., who was mowing the lawn - a side gig he worked on his days off from the sheriff's office to make extra money - after he noticed the two driving suspiciously through the neighborhood.

After calling the sheriff's office to report the suspicious activity and a possible crime in the area, Bares was found shot three times, and his truck stolen.

A manhunt ensued, and eventually both suspects were arrested and brought in for questioning, which revealed Bares had identified himself as a law enforcement officer prior to being shot.

The Advocate also reports that Richard had just been released from jail two months before Monday's incident.
