White: Common Core dispute to delay summer scores

Public school fourth-graders and eighth-graders retaking their standardized tests this summer to determine how and if they advance to the next grade may be waiting awhile to learn if they passed the tests.

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Public school fourth-graders and eighth-graders retaking their standardized tests this summer to determine how and if they advance to the next grade may be waiting awhile to learn if they passed the tests.

Gov. Bobby Jindal suspended the education department's testing contract as a back-door way to undermine Louisiana's use of the Common Core education standards and stop the purchase of testing material tied to the standards.

Superintendent of Education John White sent a memo to school superintendents Wednesday evening telling them the contract suspension means the summer retests can't be scored currently. White said schools should lock up the tests for now.

The Board of Elementary and Secondary Education has a special meeting scheduled for Tuesday to discuss whether to take legal action against the Jindal administration.
