NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Louisiana education officials are touting another increase in the number of high school students in the state who scored well enough on the ACT exam to enter college without remedial work.
The Department of Education said Thursday that 23,560 students scored an 18 or higher in 2014. That was an increase of 1,472 over the 2013 total. And it was the second increase in as many years.
The number of students who scored well enough to earn various levels of scholarships through the state TOPS program also increased. The number earning the minimum 17 score needed for a TOPS "tech" award for community or technical school tuition jumped by more than 1,000 to a total of 26,805. That's an increase of more than 6,000 from two years ago.
