NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A law toughening teacher tenure requirements in Louisiana is up for arguments before the state Supreme Court.
Friday's high court hearing deals with a Baton Rouge judge's decision that the 2012 legislation that included the tenure changes was unconstitutional.
State District Judge Michael Caldwell ruled that the legislation bundled together too many items spanning Louisiana's education laws.
That ruling was a victory for opponents of the 2012 law known as Act 1, who say it violated a constitutional provision requiring legislation to have only one object.
Act 1 also dealt with other matters, including local school boards' hiring and firing authority.
Lawyers for Gov. Bobby Jindal, who pushed the legislation, have argued that the act was constitutional because all of it deals with school employment.
