A late night crash on the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge nearly turned deadly when one motorist allegedly retaliated with gunshots.
The incident, according to a Louisiana State Police press release, happened shortly before midnight when a Chevy Silverado and a Dodge Charger in the westbound lane of the Basin Bridge near St. Martin Parish.
Both vehicles continued heading west after the crash, with the driver of the Charger, 29-year-old Cahafer Benjamin of Lafayette, allegedly pulling out a handgun and firing off three rounds into the passenger side of the Chevy.
After a brief chase with troopers, Benjamin - who was seen throwing the firearm from his vehicle - eventually surrendered. The firearm, which was later recovered, was deemed stolen.
Benjamin was booked into the St. Martin Parish jail on a range of charges, including attempted second degree murder.
