The chamber's political action committee has come out in support of Shelton Cobb's re-election bid for the Lafayette Parish School Board's District 3 seat.

Cobb, a ardent supporter of the Turnaround Plan, is the fourth candidate to receive the backing of the Greater Lafayette Chamber of Commerce's Empower PAC and the second incumbent, following its earlier endorsement of District 5's Kermit Bouillion.

"Few members of the school board have shown the courage Shelton Cobb demonstrates month after month," says Empower PAC Chairman Frank Neuner in a prepared statement. "Shelton's entire career has been devoted to educating and serving our community. Anyone who spends time with him immediately notices his passion for encouraging community involvement and understanding the concerns of the district. He is a leader that doesn't back down when it comes to putting students first. We applaud his unwavering commitment, but so do hundreds of parents and grandparents who want our children to excel in school and beyond."

Cobb, a retired educator and former school board president, says he welcomes endorsements from any group sharing his goal for bringing the school system up to an A district.

"As an educator, I know our district can do better," Cobb says. "I refuse to sit quietly while our board strips funding away from the students who need it most. Our students deserve an excellent education, no matter where they live, or what school they attend, and it's time for the board to provide our students and teachers with the support and resources they need to be successful. My involvement has always stemmed from my desire to help our children, and I'll continue to work with parents, teachers, and community leaders to make our school system the best in the state."
