Dec. 1 debate date set in Louisiana Senate runoff

Republican Senate candidate Bill Cassidy has agreed to one debate with Democratic U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu before the Dec. 6 runoff election.

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Republican Senate candidate Bill Cassidy has agreed to one debate with Democratic U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu before the Dec. 6 runoff election.

Landrieu called for six debates in the month between the midterm election and the runoff.

Cassidy, a congressman, announced Thursday that he would participate in one on Dec. 1, after early voting has closed and only days before the election.

But he said he'd be willing to add another debate date for every time Landrieu campaigns in Louisiana with President Barack Obama, who is unpopular in the state. Cassidy repeatedly ties Landrieu to Obama, saying she's been a solid supporter for his policies.

The hour-long Dec. 1 debate will be held at the WAFB-TV studio in Baton Rouge and televised around the state on Raycom Media stations.
