NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Lawyers on both sides of a same-sex marriage case have urged Louisiana's Supreme Court to rule on the matter even though the U.S. Supreme Court is expected to do so by June.

Lawyers for the state want the court to overturn a state judge's ruling that Louisiana's ban on same-sex marriages is unconstitutional. An attorney for the state told the justices Thursday that state courts need to weigh in ahead of the expected U.S. Supreme Court decision.

Lawyers for a couple legally married in California are urging a decision because it involves what they call an urgent question about whether a Lafayette woman can adopt a child born to her wife.
