FEB 5 Here's a post on Country Roads about the King Cake. There is some history here (and a little urban legend) and the author selects her five favorites. One is the Meche's big ole donut, and the other is the traditional almond pastry from Poupart. She also includes one from BR, and of course the other two are from NOLA.

FEB 5 There have been dozens of posts about Lamar White's tweet showing a white Bobby Jindal portrait next to a brown Bobby Jindal portrait and (unforgivably) calling attention to the discrepancy therein. But this one, on Jezebel, is the funniest one. It's got lots of retweets and appropriation tweets, and it's a hoot. No word on what white Bobby Jindal or brown Bobby Jindal think about it all.

BOOKS? WE DON'T WANT NO STINKIN BOOKS!
FEB 5 Columnist Stephanie Grace makes the case for Little Free Libraries in this post. The libraries, which are really glorified mailboxes in which neighbors can leave and/or borrow books, are under attack in Shreveport, she says, but they should be protected. (And at the risk of seeming unkind, perhaps Shreveport might not want to discourage reading. But we digress.) These neighborhood kiosks are beneficial on a number of levels, Grace argues.

CLANCY: BUDGET GAMES ON THE HORIZON
FEB 5 So it's no secret that Louisiana's budget is a big ole mess - so what's next? Columnist Clancy DuBos writes about the possibilities, rumors and necessities for the upcoming session. Does Bobby Jindal secretly want the legislature to pass tax increases via resolution so he can't veto, but also won't have to shut down any universities? Makes sense, doesn't it?

BATON ROUGE ER CLOSING - WHO CARES!
FEB 5 Here's a post on the Red Shtick that satirizes Bobby Jindal's reaction to the emergency room at Baton Rouge General Medical Center's MidCity campus closing - but not by much. If you're not familiar with the city, the MidCity campus is in a poor neighborhood. Poor people often use the emergency room as a doctor's office - especially since a lot of them can't get Medicaid (thanks to Jindal) and they can't go to the charity hospital (because Jindal sold it and now it's closed). The worst part (for Jindal) is, the comments indicate that a lot of people think the story is real.

FEB 5 NPR posts this story about the EPA's plan to burn tons of old explosives and other chemicals at the old Camp Minden. Understandably, people who live in the area aren't jumping for joy at the idea of all that garbage - known and unknown - being pumped into the air they breathe.
