Jazz Fest food list released

by Mary Tutwiler

As much anticipated as the release of the music listings, the food list for the 2008 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival is now online . There’s not too many surprises, you’ll still be able to get two of the best poboys around, cochon de lait and fried soft-shell crab poboys, as well as an international feast from Japan, Africa, the Caribbean, and of course Cajun country, which is represented by Prejean’s Restaurant and Creole Lunch House . Pheasant, Quail & Andouille Gumbo, Crab & Crawfish Stuffed Mushrooms, Crawfish Enchiladas will be served from Prejean’s kitchens, while Merlene Herbert of Creole Lunch House will offer her Creole Stuffed Bread and Sausage, Pepperoni & Mozzarella Stuffed Bread.

It seems downright unfair that a place where everything tastes great turns up on most of the bad-for-you lists. In the just released 16th edition of Health Care State Rankings, 2008, editors Kathleen O’Leary Morgan and Scott Morgan rank Louisiana 49th , a one point increase over last year, when letting the good times roll tumbled us into 50th place. Some of the 21 criteria used were the percentage of adults who are binge drinkers, who smoke, who are obese and do not exercise. The only other dog in the fight for last place is the state with the best fried catfish in creation, our across-the-river neighbor, Mississippi.

Now, back to the food... pecan catfish meuniere, seafood mirliton casserole, fried crab cake with smoked tomato and jalapeno tartar, alligator pie, crabmeat stuffed shrimp, fried green tomatoes, oyster patties, crawfish beignets... Jazz Fest weekends are April 25 - 27 and May 1 – 4, click here for more info.
