NYT ON THE SURVIVAL OF CAJUN FRENCH
FEB 16 Here's a story from the New York Times which takes a look at the health (or lack thereof) of Cajun French in Louisiana. It's a conversation that we've been having here for generations now, but it's good to have an outsider's view, isn't it? The author is pointing out the problem with Bobby Jindal's recent comments on assimilation. No kidding, buddy.

FEB 16 Here's an interesting post on the National Journal about Bobby Jindal's resume, as it contrasts with his recent political maneuvers. Jindal is highly educated but he hasn't been selling his "blue chip" background recently, as he's pandering to blue collar voters, the post opines. So, he's saying Bubbas don't like smart people? Huh.

MERCEDES HAS THE LATEST ON FEDERAL ED BILLS
FEB 16 This post on Mercedes Schneider's EduBlog brings us up to date on what Congress is about to do to our education system. This time, they're voting against Common Core, and cobbling something together that might be an alternative to NCLB. But since the GOP is in charge, and public education isn't exactly their priority, what does it look like?

610 STOMPERS DOING THEIR THING
FEB 16 If you can't get to New Orleans for Carnival this year, NOLA.com has a lot of videos and live streams that will make up for part of that, including this post from Sunday's Krewe of Thoth parade. It's video of the 610 Stompers, getting their groove on.

BOBBY FINALLY GETS HIS NATIONAL ATTENTION - AND BOMBS
FEB 16 Bobby Jindal spends a lot of time (apparently) thinking up stuff to say that will get his name in the papers. He's generally not too discriminating as to what it is, as long as it gets the spotlight. That's backfiring on him, Gambit opines in this post, in that the national media demands a bit more than a soundbite. There's also the little problem of the reality of Louisiana - because the national media also isn't going to take his word for how things are here. He doesn't seem to grasp the idea that attention brings scrutiny.

HERE'S SOMETHING TO INVESTIGATE, NBC
FEB 16 Here's a commentary on HuffPost that starts with the Brian Williams thing - but it's more about a general failure of the national media in its coverage of Katrina. The hurricane didn't wipe out the city, the flood did, and nobody asked why the flood happened, writes Harry Shearer. The bigger problem is, we know what happened - but no national media seemed interested in writing that story, he says.
