EWE trading politics for real estate

by The Associated Press

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Former Gov. Edwin Edwards says he's done with politics and has taken his first steps down a different path as a real estate broker.

WBRZ-TV reports Edwards, who was convicted in 2001 of racketeering and served eight years in federal prison, received a 7-2 vote Thursday from the state Real Estate Commission approving his application to be tested for his real estate broker's license.

The Advocate reports Edwards, as a convicted felon, needed the permission of a majority of the 11-member commission to proceed.

Edward says he thinks the broker's license will help as he works with friends who are trying to develop property along the Interstate 10-12 corridor from Lake Charles to Slidell.

Edwards, now 87, held a broker's license for about 20 years in the past.
