Loreauville mayor killed in weekend crash

LOREAUVILLE, La. (AP) — A juvenile passenger yanked a pickup truck's steering wheel, causing a head-on crash that killed Loreauville's mayor and injured four other people, Louisiana State Police said Saturday.

Mayor Albert Broussard, 65, was a passenger in a 2013 Ford Mustang driven by 62-year-old Phyllis Savoy, of Loreauville, who was hospitalized with critical injuries, said Master Trooper Brooks David.

David said he cannot give any details about the juvenile, including age, and investigators are still looking into circumstances leading up to the action. The juvenile and 26-year-old Catherine Derouen of New Iberia were passengers in a 2006 Dodge Ram driven by Forrest Simon, 34, of New Iberia, he said.

David said nobody in Simon's car was wearing a seat belt, and all were injured. The passengers' injuries were minor, but Simon was hospitalized with moderate injuries, he said.

David says the juvenile was cited with obstructing the driving mechanism and the adults with failure to wear seat belts.
