Candlelight vigil honors Nepal earthquake victims

UL honors victims of the tragic earthquake in Nepal with the "Make a Splash in Nepal" candlelight vigil and fundraiser.

\"Make a Splash in Nepal\" will be held Tuesday, May 5, at 6 p.m., in Oliver Hall Auditorium, Room 112

The UL Lafayette Nepalese Students’ Association and the Association of Indian Students are hosting the “Make a Splash in Nepal” candlelight vigil and fundraiser for victims of the recent earthquake that killed thousands of people in Nepal and displaced hundreds of thousands more.

The candlelight vigil and fundraiser will be held to raise awareness and provide clean water and warm blankets for nearly 500 families in and around the Sindhupalchowk District, which was one of the worst hit districts in Nepal.

UL Lafayette’s Dr. Durga Poudel, a professor of environmental sciences and a Nepalese Student Association advisor, is from the area, which is north of Kathmandu. Poudel also has led research projects in Nepal to study water availability, soil quality and disease in an effort to improve livestock health and agricultural productivity.

The “Make a Splash in Nepal” candlelight vigil and fundraiser will be held Tuesday, May 5, at 6 p.m., in Oliver Hall Auditorium, Room 112, located on the UL Campus. For more information about the event or how to make a donation, contact Dr. Poudel at [email protected] or call (337) 482-6163.
