MAKING LSU'S CAMPUS SAFE - FOR NOBODY
MAY 11 Headed to Baton Rouge this week for LSU Graduation? Maybe you want to pull out the kevlar brassiere. WAFB reports here that a couple of "militia men" were busted for walking around the campus carrying high-powered rifles. Apparently their story was that a chief of police authorized them to "patrol" the area. What were they expecting? Wildebeest?

MAY 11 Blogger "Who Dat Researcher" is offering an in-depth, detailed look at John McDonogh Sr. High in New Orleans, and what happened to it after Katrina. Fair warning: it's pretty long. If you don't have time, save it for later, because it is something anyone who cares about public education in Louisiana needs to read.

MITCH TO BOBBY: NOT SO FAST, WHACKADOODLE
MAY 11 NOLA Mayor Mitch Landrieu sticks up for the rest of us in Louisiana in this letter to the editor of the New York Times. In response to Bobby Jindal's ham-fisted, pandering op-ed about how he hates gays and so does everybody else here, Mitch pens a brief and eloquent counter. "The people of Louisiana will not go for it,"he says of Bobby's proposed pro-discrimination bill. "It's not who we are." Hear, hear!

ELBERT, HELPING TO MAKE MISSISSIPPI LOOK SMART
MAY 11 This post on Patheos is not one you'll want to send to your friends in other states. It's recounting, for the world to read, some monumental um, ignorance, shall we say, from St. Landry's own Elbert Guillory. Seems Mr. Guillory is confused about who burned whom at the stake over whether or not the world is flat. (It's not flat, by the way. It wasn't back then, and it still ain't today. Not even in St. Landry Parish.) Lawdy.

MAY 11 This post on Politico about former Speaker of the House Jim Wright is a fascinating profile from John M. Barry. It's about history, politics and gamesmanship and it is absolutely worth the read.

ATCHAFALAYA AT RISK FOR FRACKING?
MAY 11 This story on Al-Jazeera America digs into industrial dumping and fracking waste in the Atchafalaya Basin. It's a scary, scary story, and one wonders why we haven't heard much about any of this from the state's legacy newspapers. Hello? Anybody home
Monday's Blogs from the Bog!
Two "militia men" are busted "patrolling" LSU's campus with high power rifles. Great! Also today, we have some investigative work from Al Jazeera America on the Basin and from a blogger on the RSD.
