The state labor department figures released Monday show the initial claims decreased to 2,498 from the previous week's total of 2,737. For the comparable week a year earlier, there were 2,273.

The four-week moving average, which is a less volatile measure of claims, increased to 2,772 from the previous week's total of 2,722.

Continued unemployment claims claimed for the week ending May 2 decreased to 22,639 compared to 22,809 the previous week.

The four-week moving average for such claims increased to 22,425 from the previous week's average of 22,099.
