Council nixes smoking ban for bars

The 5-4 vote came following more than three hours of public comment, the overwhelming majority of it in favor of the ban and much of that support coming from musicians who work in bars and nightclubs.

The Lafayette City-Parish Council Tuesday narrowly defeated an ordinance that would have banned smoking in bars within the city and unincorporated Lafayette Parish. The 5-4 vote came following more than three hours of public comment, the overwhelming majority of it in favor of the ban and much of that support coming from musicians who work in bars and nightclubs.

As local media report, the discussion turned toward the issue of government overreach as opposed to public health.
