Lafayette gets $279K+ payout in BP settlement

by The Associated Press

LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) — Lafayette Consolidated Government has announced that its payout in a settlement with BP for economic losses resulting from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster has been finalized.

The Advertiser reports officials announced Tuesday that Lafayette was awarded $279,769. The city-parish filed a claim in 2013. Several public entities in the state had already reached settlement agreements.

Officials say the law firm's fee would be 15 percent of the payout.

Dee Stanley, chief administrative officer of the city-parish, says they are still determining how the money will be spent.

Chief Financial Officer Lorie Toups says it's possible that administration and the council will split the money between the city and parish general funds based on population.
