BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Republican Scott Angelle's campaign for governor is fighting back against an attack ad launched by a super PAC supporting GOP contender David Vitter.
Angelle's campaign says the ad falsely accuses the state utility regulator of wanting to "tax the Internet." Campaign officials say Vitter supported a state law that does just that.
At issue is an ad running in north Louisiana by the Fund for Louisiana's Future. It criticizes Angelle for supporting passage of a federal law that would require companies to collect state sales taxes on Internet purchases.
Vitter, a U.S. senator, voted against the legislation.
Angelle media consultant Roy Fletcher says people in Louisiana already are supposed to pay those taxes — under a 1994 state law backed by Vitter when he was a state lawmaker.
