BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Louisiana's sheriffs are backing former Plaquemines Parish Billy Nungesser to be the state's next lieutenant governor, choosing him over three other competitors.
The sheriffs' association announced its endorsements Wednesday for five statewide races on the Oct. 24 ballot. It didn't choose among the four major contenders vying to be Louisiana's next governor.
In the open lieutenant governor's race, Nungesser, a Republican, was chosen over two other GOP rivals, Jefferson Parish President John Young and state Sen. Elbert Guillory, and a Democratic contender, Baton Rouge Mayor Kip Holden.
For attorney general, the sheriffs are supporting Republican incumbent Buddy Caldwell's re-election bid, rather than his closest challenger, GOP former Congressman Jeff Landry.
The association also is endorsing Secretary of State Tom Schedler, Treasurer John Kennedy and Agriculture Commissioner Mike Strain for re-election.
