WVLA reported Monday that a new independent poll shows Democrat John Bel Edwards leading U.S. Sen. David Vitter by 20 percentage points in the Louisiana Gubernatorial runoff set for Saturday, Nov. 21. The poll was conducted by WVLA and JMC Analytics and has a margin of error of 4 percent.

JMC Analytics surveyed 600 likely voters Oct. 28-31. When asked who they’d vote for if the election were held today, 52 percent of those surveyed chose Edwards, a state rep, 32 percent chose Vitter, and 16 percent were undecided.

According to The Advocate, the poll found Edwards pulling in 41 percent of the white voters surveyed and 24 percent of Republicans. With the exception of Alexandria, Edwards led in all areas surveyed.

“While this poll confirms that our message of putting Louisiana first is resonating with the people of our state, our campaign will not slow down,” Edwards said in a statement. “For the next three weeks, I’ll continue to travel our state to talk with voters about my vision for the future. It’s time for honest leadership in Louisiana, and we have so much more work to do.”

“These numbers are surprising because they show that Edwards, a Democrat, will pick up more votes from former Republican candidates Scott Angelle and Jay Dardenne than Vitter, a fellow Republican,” WVLA reported. Read the story here.

A separate, Democratic poll by Anzalone Liszt Grove found Edwards leading Vitter 52 percent to 40 percent. That poll of 700 likely voters, conducted by phone Oct. 26-28, was commissioned by anti-Vitter Gumbo PAC and has a margin of error of 3 to 7 percentage points.
