LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) — Two new tax proposals to generate money for Lafayette Parish schools will be on the April 9 ballot.
The Advertiser reports the school board voted unanimously Wednesday to place two measures on the ballot. It will be the first time a new tax proposal has appeared on a ballot since 2011, when voters overwhelmingly rejected a nearly $1 billion proposal.
The two propositions include a tax that would generate $380 million, through bond sales, over 30 years. That money would pay for several major school replacements and renovations.
The second proposition would generate a total of $9.3 million. Of that, $5.2 million would be used for school maintenance. The remaining $4.1 million would be used for school safety and security, technology in schools and several other proposals.
