More than 1,000 people from across Acadiana, representing about 50 companies and organizations, have signed up to participate in The Independent Weekly's inaugural Corporate Challenge, a 5K run/walk in River Ranch. It's $35 to participate, and the race starts at 4 p.m. Each participant will be given an electronic chip for accurate timing.

Special events include a cell phone toss, costume contest and a quick-dance contest. Awards will be presented to the fastest CEO and the CEO with the best excuse, among other categories.

Held at Elysian Fields (the park behind Ascension Day Preschool), the event is from 1 p.m. till sunset and also includes an office party and wellness expo. The post-race party, with music by Roddie Romero and the Hub-City All-Stars, starts at 5 p.m. There will be free food and beverages for all participants.

A portion of the proceeds from the Corporate Challenge will benefit the Lafayette Community Health Care Clinic.
