Treasure hunting in the Gulf of Mexico

by Mary Tutwiler

A group of treasure hunters from New Iberia -- Avery Munson, Craig DeRouen, and Gary and Renée Hebert -- spent nearly 20 years searching for the New York, a steam ship that sank in 60 feet of water outside the port of Cameron, La., in 1846. They are the subject of the Independent's cover story this week, "X Marks the Spot: How a hunt through basement archives led four Acadiana divers and partners on an obsessive 20-year quest to find an 1846 Gulf of Mexico shipwreck."

Expect to read more about their adventure soon. National media are just beginning to pick up the story. Says Munson, "who doesn't dream about finding sunken treasure?"
