IceGators suspend operations for next season

by The Associated Press

LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) — The Louisiana IceGators will suspend operations for the 2016-17 hockey season because of renovations at the Cajundome, the team's home arena.

General Manager Louis Dumont, in a statement Monday, said arena renovations will begin at the end of May and run through November. With the Southern Professional Hockey League's 2016-17 season starting in October, Dumont says a feasible schedule is unavailable at this time.

The team's owners and staff members met with Cajundome management to try to find options to play the season, but Dumont says they concluded suspending operations is "the best route to take."

The IceGators closed the 2015-16 season with a semifinals series loss to the RiverKings in April, which eliminated Louisiana from the league playoffs.
