Lafayette Parish Assessor Conrad Comeaux can soon receive a car allowance on top of the position's six-figure salary, under a bill signed by Gov. John Bel Edwards.
The governor's office said Tuesday that Edwards had signed the bill. It takes effect Aug. 1.
At least eight bills attempted to grant more than a dozen parish assessors car allowances up to 15 percent of Comeaux could get a $23,500 or more allowance at the maximum 15 percent. That comes on top of a nearly $157,000 salary and an additional 10 percent personal expense allowance.
The allowance must come from existing assessor's office funds.
