C’est What? Is Jeanerette pumping holy water now?

Residents report average monthly bills rising from $40 to $1,600.

Sugar City, we have a problem. The mayor of Jeanerette is remaining mum so far on what appears to be an issue involving under-billing residents for their municipal water service going back to 2013.

According to a report on KATC, a number of residents say their latest monthly water bills spiked by about 40-fold — from around $40 to more than $1,600. The news station further reports that residents are being offered the option of paying the bills in installments.

It should be noted that Jeanerette is one of the poorest communities in the state, ranking 277th out of 389 Louisiana municipalities in per capita income, according to federal data cited by Wikipedia.
