School board does 180, embraces sales tax

The Lafayette Parish School Board, long considering putting a property tax before voters this spring, reversed course Wednesday and instead embraced a sales tax, according to The Advertiser.

The board hasn’t made a final decision on whether to ask voters for hundreds of millions in additional revenue, but it appears now that if the board votes to place a tax referendum on the ballot this year, it will be a sales tax. The daily reports that board members set Feb. 15 as the date they will decide the matter.

Sentiment in favor of a sales tax over a property tax, however, was not unanimous among board members. Read more here.
