Cassidy: Let states keep Obamacare if they want

“California, New York: You love ObamaCare, you can keep it.”

In a sign that Republicans on Capitol Hill are realizing they throw 20 million Americans off their health insurance by repealing the Affordable Care Act without a replacement, U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy is co-sponsoring a proposal that would let states keep Obamacare if they choose to.

The Hill and other media are reporting that Cassidy and fellow GOP Sen. Susan Collins of Maine offered up what they’re calling the Patient Freedom Act on Monday. For states — typically GOP-controlled states that have not taken advantage of Medicaid expansion offered in Obamacare — that choose to exit the ACA, Cassidy’s alternative plan would provide tax credits linked to health savings accounts to help people access health care. For states that wish to remain with the ACA, subsidies, mandates and protections for pre-existing conditions would remain in place.
